As a Director of Photography:  The art of knowing when to move the camera and when not to, what angle and movement best illustrates the emotion necessary for an audience to be captivated by the story and convinced by the character. How to manipulate light to best suit the subject and the importance of understanding the subject to best justify both the technology used and the story being told!
The camera is the paintbrush, the screen is the canvas.
To respect the needs and wants of the directors and producers, to know my duty and place as a DOP, adhering to instructions but advising where best my position allows.
